Death and the Maiden by shmeeden Death and the Maiden by shmeeden
With all this LND nonsense, I was feeling nostalgic for some Leroux, and reread the novel -- mostly while killing time on the subway.

I sketched this up tonight in pencil. Took about... an hour? Ish? I lost track. I went entirely from my brain -- no photo reference -- so there are likely some errors. But I got the mood I wanted, which is the main thing for me.

So, this being Gaston Leroux's Phantom, you get a death's head Erik and a blonde Christine.

Hope you enjoy!

GUH! :eager: It's so amazing I could DIE!! This is exactly as I've imagined the Leroux characters, and I haven't managed to find anything this close to my imagination--and Leroux's descriptions, of course. Brilliance. Utter brilliance.

I love how Christine is childlike, but womanly at the same time. Too many artists go to one extreme or the other. They have her as this smoldering seductress type or with the face of a seven year old. She may have been a bit lost and very young, but she wasn't a complete child. She had some fire. ;)

And Erik! He's perfectly and appropriately deathly! With a full mask, you could be tricked into thinking he's perfectly normal; he's not entirely inhuman, but meeting up with that face in a dark place and if taken by surprise... hoooo-boy. Yes, I can see the monsteresque qualities, too.

Sorry, I just had to gush! ^^; I'm so excited over this piece!! :la:

I'd love to do more Leroux based stuff. (Just posted a Raoul, actually.) Time has been soooo super tight lately though. It's been crazy! Still, sketching stuff like this helps keep me a little sane.

Thanks for the comments! Responses like yours help to keep me drawing the things I love. :)

Oh, I love your Raoul, too! Wonderful!! :)

Understood. I write, and for a good stretch I had this obsessive need to spit out pages like nothing to it. Now there's this strange hustle in the house and I'm not able to do as much. Must be the start of school or something.

Then I'll continue to comment whenever I get the chance. :handshake:

I too lament the sorrily saccherine and wholly inaccurate work of LND! Here you have rendered the very core essence of Erik and Christine. I have never seen in all my five years being a POTO fanatic such hideousness combined with a strange beauty in Erik. And the lines are streamlined and clear, lending such an elegnat air and mastered skill to this intrigiung maqsterpice you have created here.

That is high praise indeed! Thank you very much. :)

I'm thinking I might revisit it as a more finished piece. Or maybe I'll try some additional ones. Remains to be seen, I suppose!

Again, thanks!

Lots of practice! I've been drawing my whole life, so it's been a gradual thing. I also went to art school and did a degree, and then took lessons in illustration after. I'm still definitely learning as I go -- it's a nonstop process!

Yes, you have such immaculate skill, no doubt, you are quite the master at your trade and gift, Miss. :D
My art work is rather poor, but it must be said that the concept exceeds the execution of my work. My new project which will be posted when my scanner is repaired , I pray it will be up to snuff, so to speak.
Really, Miss, your work are masterpieces! i have yet to see another artist aside from :iconprimulatook: execute and creat such beauty and depth of expression.

I think, unfortunately, one never gets to the point where the concept doesn't exceed the execution. But it's the thing to aim for, nevertheless! Just keep making art. If you keep working at it, it will always improve. I look at stuff I did just a couple of years ago and there's a huge difference. Practice, observation, and stubbornness are key.

Ooh, I hadn't seen that artist's work. Very nice stuff. I'm very flattered to be one of your favourites! :)

No photo reference? Well, you're simply great! I estimate you, ohhh yes.
I like the way you drew Erik :) I like Christine a little less, but perhaps it is only because of my personal hatred for the character. Eheh.
Ok, let's be serious... I think her hair has something strange o.o but well, no photo reference! It is fantastic simply for this, so don't worry :) I like it very much! My compliments

PS: yeah, let's forget about LND. At least for a little while... I start to think that too much of this nonsense could kill us... :S and i can't wait to read the book! I've bought it recently, but now I must study-is it as wonderful as I can imagine? :D

Thanks for the comments -- here and on facebook, too!

Yeah, there are a few things that are a little off in my Christine drawing, the more I look at it, but I was trying to do this as a quick sketch and not get too hung up on it. :) Oddly, the way I've drawn her here isn't the way I picture her looking in the book -- this is just how this drawing worked out, but I liked it.

You haven't read the Gaston Leroux book yet? Well, you'll certainly be in for some surprises, in that case! Most of the book is actually centered around Raoul, and Erik isn't featured anywhere near as much as you'd expect. It's neat though, because you end up seeing the characters in a very different way.

You're welcome of course :)

Uhm, quick sketch... I not only estimate you, I envy you too! You're really a good artist :) but how do you picture her hair?

Raoul?? O gosh.. please not T_T I don't like him so much (I mean: I hate him), but ok, I will read it anyway of course ;)
What do you mean when you say that you see the characters in a different way? Do you mean when you finish them?

Raoul will surprise you. He's a much more interesting and sympathetic character in the book. I really like him in it; he doesn't get a very good representation in other versions, unfortunately. He's actually quite shy at the beginning, and his character develops a lot as the story progresses. He and Christine have a lot more history in it as well. It's not like Raoul shows up and "steals" her. They really were in love before she joined the opera, but he joined the navy and was gone for a while. So he doesn't just show up and ruin what she has with Erik -- she and Raoul were already in love before the events in the story.

Oh, and as far as Christine's hair: she's blonde in the novel. That's probably what's throwing you off with her hair here!

Yeah, I knew they were really in love one with the other. In fact I didn't think he "stole" her, because I know of their love... but... poor Erik :(
And I knew even the fact that he is not so terrible as he could seem. I mean... he risked his life, going to Erik's lair, to save her. if this isn't love...
But poor Erik!! (I'm banal, I know)

Anyway. Yeah, I'm used to see and imagine Christine with curly and brown hair... and brown eyes, too... only reading Requiem Mask (do you know it?) here on DA I knew that she's different, in the book :P

That's good to hear. People act too often as though Erik had a "right" to Christine, or a claim on her. Only she had the right to decide whom to be with, and for some reason people end up hating Raoul because she loved him. I've always found that strange.

Yup, I've read Requiem Mask. It's quite well done, especially for a fan comic.

I don't think Erik had any rights or claims on her, but I actually hate Raoul. I mean... it is funny to hate that guy. Really funny, a lot of times... But I can understand really well his qualities, and I don't think he is a bad character, or kind of person I would hate in the real life or anything like that. But allow me to kid him... "fop"... xD

I think Requiem Mask is a very well done comic, too :)
